AACR2 headings for local churches and parishes in Great Britain
Abstract by Colin Mills

The following abstract by Colin Mills is from the cover article of Catalogue & Index, Spring 1997, pages 1-5. Original article by John Gilbert.

John Gilbert analyses the discrepancies in the interpretations of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) by the Library of Congress and the British Library.  This issue arises because these libraries have agreed to create a common authority file [list of standard usages - Ed] for cataloguing.  The discrepancies exist not only between, but also within the interpretations adopted by the two libraries.   This can lead to confusion, especially if catalogue entries supplied by both libraries are used, and users may miss relevant material unless facilities exist to conduct a keyword search on eg an OPAC terminal.

Gilbert suggests that this confusion implies the relevant rules were poorly drafted, and proposes that except where the same heading can be used for a parish and its main church, headings for the established churches in Great Britain should be based on the church buildings; and headings for corresponding parishes should be established directly under their names for publications from or about the parishes as organisations.  Headings for parishes which have only ecclesiastical functions should contain the addition "ecclesiastical parish".
