INTRODUCTION

 

 

This document sets out some Spanish noble families from the later 14th century onwards but is far from complete either in its coverage or in the details of the individual families covered. 

 

 

 

Chapter 1.    ÁLVAREZ de TOLEDO

 

 

 

1.         don GARCÍA Álvarez de Toledo .  Alcalde mayor de Toledo.  m doña MENCÍA de Meneses, daughter of ---.  García & his wife had three children: 

a)         don GARCÍA Álvarez de Toledo (-Ciudad Rodrigo 1370).  1st Señor de Oropesa, Valdecorneja, Piedrahita y Horcajada 8 Jun 1369.  Master of the Order of Santiago 1359, resigned 1366. 

b)         ---.  m ---.  One child: 

i)          don FERNANDO Álvarez de Toledo .  2nd Señor de Oropesa.  m doña ELVIRA de Ayala, daughter of --- (-after 17 Aug 1400).  "Diego Hurtado de Mendoza almirante de Castilla" granted "unas casas en Toledo a su prima doña Elvira Ayala, mujer de Fernán Álvarez de Toledo II señor de Oropesa" by charter dated 17 Aug 1400[1]

c)         don FERNANDO Álvarez de Toledo (-near Lisbon 1384).  Señor de Valdecorneja.  Mariscal de Castilla.  He died of the plague.  m (1366) doña LEONOR de Ayala Señora de Torrejón de Velasco, daughter of don FERNANDO Pérez de Ayala & his wife doña Elvira de Ceballos.  Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 11 Sep 1441 which her daughter "Doña Maria de Ayala hija de Fernán Álvarez de Toledo señor de Hijares y de doña Teresa de Ayala señora de Pinto" issued relating to "su heredad de Dosbarruelos, término de Toledo"[2].  Fernando & his wife had two children: 

i)          don GARCÍA Álvarez de Toledo .  Señor de Valdecorneja.  m doña CONSTANZA Sarmiento, daughter of ---.

ii)         doña MARÍA de Ayala (-after 11 Sep 1441).  "Doña Maria de Ayala hija de Fernán Álvarez de Toledo señor de Hijares y de doña Teresa de Ayala señora de Pinto" issued a charter dated 11 Sep 1441 relating to "su heredad de Dosbarruelos, término de Toledo"[3]

 

 

 

 

Chapter 2.    AYALA

 

 

1.         don PEDRO López de AyalaHis ancestry is set out by Argote Molina[4].  Señor de Unza, Mena y Albudeite.  Adelantado mayor of the kingdom of Murcia.  Mistress (1)doña INÉS de Azagra, daughter of ---.  Pedro had two illegitimate children by Mistress (1): 

a)         don PEDRO López de Ayala .  Señor de Campos, Albudeite y Levadura.  Alférez mayor del Pendón de la Banda 1367, as such present at the battle of Nájera. 

b)         [5]don FERNANDO Pérez (-after 2 Dec 1378[6], bur Quijana, Torre de Ayala).  Señor del Valle de Ayala.  [7].  Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I records that King Pedro I granted “una tierra...las Encartaciones...cerca de Vizcaya” to “Don Ferrand Perez de Ayala” in 1351[8]He was the author of a genealogical treatise on his family 'Libro del linaje de los señores de Ayala'[9], completed by his son.  m doña ELVIRA Álvarez de Ceballos, daughter of don DIEGO Gutiérrez de Ceballos & his wife doña Juana García Carrillo[10] (-before 1372, bur Quijana, Torre de Ayala).  Fernando & his wife had three children: 

i)          don PEDRO López de Ayala "el Cronista" (Vitoria 1332-Calahorra 1407, bur Quijana, Torre de Ayala).  Señor de Ayala y Salvatierra de Álava.  Canciller mayor de Castilla 1406-1407.  Mayor of don Juan I King of Castile.  Merino mayor de Guipúzcoa.  Alférez mayor del Pendón de la Banda 5 Sep 1371 to 21 Jul 1385.  m doña LEONOR de Guzmán, daughter of don PEDRO Suárez de Toledo Señor de Bolaños & his wife doña María Ramírez de Guzmán.  Pedro & his wife had two children: 

(a)       don FERNÁN Pérez de Ayala (-17 Sep 1436).  Señor de Ayala y Salvatierra de Álava.  Alférez mayor del Pendón de la Banda 1402.  m doña MARÍA Sarmiento Señora de Salinillas, daughter of DIEGO Gómez Sarmiento Señor de Salinas & his wife doña Leonor de Castilla (-1438).

(b)       doña TERESA de Ayala (-31 Aug 1424).  Florez records a donation made to Santo Domingo el Real by “Doña Ines de Ayala” which names “Maria mi nieta fija del Rey D. Pedro...de mi fija Doña Teresa, Priora...de las Sorores de Santo Domingo el Real”, dated 15 Jun 1395[11].  Prioress of Santo Domingo el Real.  An epitaph in Santo Domingo el Real records the death 31 Aug 1424 of “Doña Teresa de Ayala, Priora deste Monasterio, hija de D. Diego Gomez de Ayala, Alcalde Mayor de Toledo, y de Doña Ines de Ayala[12]Mistress of: don PEDRO I "el Cruel" King of Castile and León, son of don ALFONSO XI "el Justo" King of Castile and Leon & his second wife Infanta dona Maria de Portugal (Burgos 30 Aug 1334-murdered Montiel 22 Mar 1369). 

iii)        doña ELVIRA de Ayala m don PEDRO Suárez de Guzmán, son of don PEDRO Suárez de Toledo & his wife doña María Ramírez de Guzmán. 

 

 

 

 

Chapter 3.    BIEDMA

 

 

1.         don RODRIGO Íñiguez de Biedma “el Mozo”, son of ---.  Señor de Ortalança.  Caudillo mayor of the bishopric of Jaén[13]m doña JUANA Díaz de Fines, Señora de Fines, Alba de Tormes and Salvatierra, daughter of don DIEGO Díaz de Fines [don DIEGO Sánchez II de Fines] [Castilla-León] & his wife doña Juana Ruiz de Haro (-1296 or after).  Szabolcs de Vajay records Juana as the daughter of Diego Sánchez de Fines (the younger) and his wife Juana Ruiz de Haro, but does not cite the primary source on which this information is based[14].  Argote Molina names "doña Juana Diaz" as the daughter of "don Diego Sánchez de Funes" (proceeding on the assumption that there was only one person of that name, as noted above) but does not name her mother, recording her marriage to "Rodrigo Iñíguez de Biedma Señor de Estiviel y Alcayde de los Alcaçares de Iaen" but does not cite the primary source on which this information is based[15].  children[16]:

a)         don DIEGO Sánchez de Biedmam ---.  The name of Diego´s wife is not known.  Diego & his wife had one child: 

i)          don MENENDO Rodríguez de Biedma (-before 13 Jun 1384).  "Men Rodriguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto, hijo de Día Sánchez de Biedma" granted revenue to "su primera mujer doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo, hija de Alfonso Meléndez" by charter dated 5 Oct 1347[17]m firstly doña MENCÍA Fernández de Toledo, daughter of don ALFONSO Meléndez de Toledo & his wife --- (-after 5 Oct 1347).  "Men Rodriguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto, hijo de Día Sánchez de Biedma" granted revenue to "su primera mujer doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo, hija de Alfonso Meléndez" by charter dated 5 Oct 1347[18]m secondly doña TERESA Manrique, daughter of ---.  Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 13 Jun 1384 under which "…doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique" received part of her father´s property[19]Menendo & his first wife had one child: 

(a)       doña SANCHA Méndez de Biedma .  A charter dated 13 Jun 1384 records the division of the property of "Men Rodríguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto y…de doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo señora de Mocejón" between "sus hijas doña Sancha Méndez de Biedma y doña Teresa de Biedma, mujer de Alfonso Fernández Portocarrero, y doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique"[20]

(b)       doña TERESA de Biedma .  A charter dated 13 Jun 1384 records the division of the property of "Men Rodríguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto y…de doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo señora de Mocejón" between "sus hijas doña Sancha Méndez de Biedma y doña Teresa de Biedma, mujer de Alfonso Fernández Portocarrero, y doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique"[21]m don ALFONSO Fernández Portocarrero, son of ---. 

Menendo & his second wife had one child: 

(c)       doña ELVIRA de Biedma .  A charter dated 13 Jun 1384 records the division of the property of "Men Rodríguez de Biedma señor de Santisteban del Puerto y…de doña Mencía Fernández de Toledo señora de Mocejón" between "sus hijas doña Sancha Méndez de Biedma y doña Teresa de Biedma, mujer de Alfonso Fernández Portocarrero, y doña Elvira de Biedma, hija de dicho Men Rodríguez y de su segunda mujer doña Teresa Manrique"[22]

c)         don PEDRO Sánchez de Biedma.  Knight of the Order de la Banda. 

d)         doña MARÍA Ruiz de Biedmam FERNÁN Alfonso II de Córdoba, Señor de Cañete.  Alcalde mayor of Córdoba.

Chapter 4.    ENRÍQUEZ - SEÑORES de MEDINA de RIOSECO, Condes de MELGAR y RUEDA

 

 

 

don ALFONSO Enríquez, illegitimate son of don FADRIQUE Alfonso [de Castilla] Señor de Haro & his wife his mistress "la Paloma" [a Jewess] (Guadalcanal 1354-Guadalupe monastery 1429).  A later Abreviada (Continuator) of Ayala´s Crónica de Juan I names “Don Alfonso Enriquez, fijo del Maestre Don Fadrique, hermano del Conde Don Pedro, que es Almirante de la mar” when recording his marriage[23].  Legitimated.  Adelantado mayor de León.  Señor de Medina de Rioseco, Aguilar de Campos, Valdunquillo y Bolanos.  1st Almirante de Castilla. 

m as her second husband, doña JUANA de Mendoza "la Ricahembra", widow of don DIEGO Gómez Manrique Señor de Amusco [Adelantado mayor de Castilla], daughter of don PEDRO González de Mendoza Señor de Hita y Buitrago & his wife doña Aldonza de Ayala.  A later Abreviada (Continuator) of Ayala´s Crónica de Juan I records in 1380 that “Diego Gomez Manrique” married “Doña Juana fija de Pero Gonzalez de Mendoza”, adding that “su madre de Diego Gomez” [referring to Pedro Manrique] married secondly “Don Alfonso Enriquez, fijo del Maestre Don Fadrique, hermano del Conde Don Pedro, que es Almirante de la mar[24]

Alonso & his wife had twelve children: 

1.         FADRIQUE Enríquez (-23 Dec 1473).  2nd Almirante de Castilla.  Conde de Melgar y Rueda.  2nd Señor de Medina de Rioseco.  m firstly (1430) MARIANA de Ayala Córdoba y Toledo 4th Señora de Casarrubios del Monte, daughter of DIEGO Fernández de Córdoba & his wife Inés de Ayala Señora de Casarrubios del Monte (-Dec 1431).  m secondly TERESA de Quiñones, daughter of DIEGO Fernández de Quiñones Señor de Luna & his wife María de Toledo.  Fadrique & his first wife had two children:

a)         doña JUANA Enríquez (1425-[Zaragoza/Barcelona] 13 Feb 1468).  Señora de Casarrubios del Monte y Arroyojolinos.  She took an active part in negotiations with the remenças to end the civil war in 1462, but was besieged in Girona with her son Fernando by the forces of the Generalitat led by the count of Pallars.  Rescued by French forces led by Gaston de Foix 23 Jul 1462.  m (Torrelobatón 1 Apr  1444) as his second wife, Infante don JUAN de Castilla y León, JUAN II King of Navarre, son of don FERNANDO "él de Antequera" King of Aragon & his wife doña Leonor Urraca de Castilla (Medina del Campo 29 Jun 1398-Barcelona 19 Jan 1479, bur Nuestra Señora de Poblet).  He succeeded in 1458 as JUAN II King of Aragon

b)         MARINA (-after 1431). 

Fadrique & his second wife had nine children:

c)         ALONSO Enríquez (-Valladolid 12 May 1485).  3rd Almirante de Castilla.  3rd Señor de Medina de Rioseco.  m MARÍA de Velasco, daughter of PEDRO Fernández de Velasco Conde de Haro [Constable of Castile] & his wife Beatriz Manrique de Castilla.

d)         PEDRO Enríquez de Quiñones .  Señor de Tarifa y Alcalá de los Gazules.  m firstly BEATRIZ de Ribera y Hurtado de Mendoza, daughter of PER AFÁN de Ribera Conde de los Molares & his wife María Hurtado de Mendoza de los Marqueses de Santillana.  m secondly CATALINA de Ribera y Hurtado de Mendoza 4th Condesa de los Morales, daughter of PER AFÁN de Ribera Conde de los Molares & his wife María Hurtado de Mendoza de los Marqueses de Santillana.

i)          TERESA Enríquez de Luna .  Señora de Villada.  m (1486) ENRIQUE Enríquez de Velasco de los Condes de Alba de Liste (-Perpignan 1497). 

ii)         FRANCISCA Enriquez de Lunam BERNARDO de Sandoval y Rojas 2nd Marqués de Denia (-1536). 

iii)        ELVIRA Enríquez de Luna (-Montilla 1512)m PEDRO Fernández de Cordoba Marqués de Priego Señor de Aguilar (-1517). 

iv)       MARÍA Enríquez de Luna ([1474]-1539).  She became a nun at Santa Clara at Gandía after the death of her second husband.  m firstly PEDRO LUIS de Borja Duque de Gandía, illegitimate son of RODRIGO de Borja [Pope ALEXANDER VI] & his mistress --- ([1462]-3 Sep 1488).  m secondly (Sep 1493) JUAN de Borja Duque de Gandía, illegitimate son of RODRIGO de Borja [Pope ALEXANDER VI]  & his mistress Vanozza de' Cataneis (Rome 1476-murdered Rome 14 or 16 Jun 1497). 

f)          FRANCISCO Enríquez (-Apr 1491).  Señor de la Vega de Ruy Ponce.  m firstly ELVIRA Lasso Manrique, daughter of FADRIQUE Manrique de Castilla Señor de Banos & his wife Beatriz de Figueroa.  m secondly INÉS Giron, daughter of PEDRO Girón & his wife ---.  child of first marriage:

a)         MARÍA Enríquez m ÁLVARO de Luna Señor de Carvajalos y Escamilla (-1441). 

 

 

 

 

Chapter 5.    DUQUES de GANDÍA (BORJA/BORGIA)

 

 

RODRIGO de Borja, son of JOFRE de Borja y Doms & his wife Isabel de Borja y Martí (1431-murdered 1503)He was elected as Pope ALEXANDER VI in 1492.  During his papacy he established his relatives in powerful appanages and marriages.  He was poisoned. 

Mistresses (1) - (3):  ---.  The names of Rodrigo´s early mistresses are not known. 

Mistress (4): VANOZZA de' Cataneis, daughter of GIACOPO Pinctoris & his wife --- (1442-Rome 1518). 

Mistress (5): GIULIA Farnese, sister of Pope Paul III, daughter of ---. 

Mistress (6) - (7):  ---.  The names of Rodrigo´s last mistresses are not known. 

Rodrigo had three illegitimate children by Mistresses (1) – (3): 

1.         PEDRO LUIS Borja ([1462]-3 Sep 1488).  He was created Duque de Gandiam as her first husband, doña MARÍA Enríquez de Luna, daughter of ENRIQUE Fernández [de Castilla] Señor de Orce [Admiral of Sicily] & his wife María de Luna ([1474]-1530 or 1539).  She married secondly her brother-in-law Juan de Borja 2nd Duque de Gandia

2.         ISABELLA Borgia (1467-1541).  m (1483) PIETRO GIOVANNI Matuzzi, son of ---. 

3.         GIROLAMA Borgia ([1469]-1483).  m ([1482]) GIANANDREA Cesarini, son of --- (-1483). 

Rodrigo had four illegitimate children by Mistress (4): 

4.         CESARE Borgia (1475-killed in battle Viana 1507).  Archbishop of Valencia, Cardinal 1493.  He resigned his religious posts in 1494.  Duca di Romagna.  Duc de Valentinois, Comte de Diois, Duca d'Urbino, sovereign Principe di Piombino.  m (10 May 1499) CHARLOTTE d'Albret Dame de Chalus, daughter of ALAIN Sire d'Albret & his wife Françoise de Blois dite de Bretagne Ctss de Périgord (-11 Mar 1514).  Cesare & his wife had one child:  LUISA Borgia (1500-1553).  Pss Borgia, Dss de Valentinois.  m firstly (1517) LOUIS de La Trémoïlle Vicomte de Thouars Principe di Tarento Comte de Guines, son of --- (-killed in battle Pavia 1525).  m secondly (1530) PHILIPPE de Bourbon de Busset, son of --- (-killed in battle St Quentin 1557).  Cesare had two illegitimate children by unknown mistresses: 

a)         GIROLAMO Borgia ([1501]-).  Lived in Ferrara.  m firstly ISABELLA Pizzabernari, daughter of ---.  m secondly ISABELLA da Carpi, daughter of ---.  Girolamo & his [first/second] wife had two children:

b)         CAMILLA LUCREZIA Borgia (-1573).  Abbess of San Bernardino, Ferrara. 

5.         JUAN de Borja (Rome 1476-murdered Rome 14 or 16 Jun 1497).  He succeeded his half-brother as second Duque de Gandia, Duca di Sessa, Grand Constable of Naples, papal Gonfalonier and General Captain, Governor of St Peters.  m (Sep 1493) as her second husband, his sister-in-law, doña MARÍA Enríquez de Luna, widow of PEDRO LUIS Borja Duque de Gandía, daughter of don ENRIQUE Fernández [de Castilla] Señor de Orce [Admiral of Sicily] & his wife doña María de Luna ([1474]-1530 or 1539).  Juan & his wife had two children: 

a)         JUAN de Borja (1494-Gandía 9 Jan 1543)He succeeded his father as third Duque de Gandia, Duca di Sessa, Pr di Teabo e Tricario, Grand Constable of Naples.  m firstly (Valladolid 31 Jan 1509) doña JUANA de Aragón, illegitimate daughter of don ALFONSO de Aragón Archbishop of Saragossa [son of don Fernando II King of Aragon] & his mistress doña Ana de Gurrea Señora de Argabieso (-1520).  m secondly ([1523]) doña FRANCISCA de Castro y Pinos, daughter of --- (-1576).

Alfonso & his wife had three children:

Leonor de Guzman" as the children of "Alonso Perez de Guzman", illegitimate son of "D. Pedro Nuñez de Guzman", and his wife "D. Maria Alonso"[35]Ayala´s Crónica de Pedro I names “grandes parientes...Don Juan Alfonso de Guzman Señor de Sant Lucar de Barrameda é de Bejer, é Don Alvar Perez de Guzman Señor de Olvera...” of “Doña Leonor de Guzman” present at Medina Sidonia, when the body of King Alfonso XI passed through the town in 1350[36]m doña URRACA Álvarez Osorio, daughter of don ÁLVARO Nuñez Osorio & his wife --- (-murdered 1367).  The Nobiliario of Pedro Conde de Barcelos records that "D. Luis de la Cerda" married "D. Leonor"[44].  Señora de Huelva.  The testament of "doña Leonor de Guzmán señora del Puerto de Santa María" is dated 23 Jul 1341[45]m (Seville 1306) as his first wife, LOUIS de la Cerda, son of Infante don ALFONSO de la Cerda de Castilla, Señor de Alba, Bejar y Gibraleón & his wife Mathilde de Brienne-Eu (in France [1291]-La Motte du Rhône 5 Jul 1348).  Seigneur de Talmont 1339.  Pope Clement VI created him "Prince de Fortunie" granting him the suzerainty of the Canary Islands 15 Nov 1344.  Comte de Clermont et de Talmont, Admiral of France.

Enrique...Señora de la villa de Duenyas” recorded that “en Sevilla la Condesa Doña Beatriz mi hermana, muger que fué del Conde Don Juan de Niebla” bequeathed property to “Don Enrique Conde de Niebla é á Don Alfonso é á Don Juan...sus fillos legítimos”, that she had deprived “mis sobrinos sus herederos” of certain of the property, and therefore that she bequeathed property to them[48]

Juan & his wife had three children: 

1.         don ENRIQUE Pérez de Guzmán (-1436).  Conde de Niebla, Señor de Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  Doña Leonor fija del Rey D. m ---.  Salazar y Castro records two different wives for don Álvaro in two different sections of his work: in one part, he states that she was doña MARÍA de la Cerda Señora de Gibraleón, without giving her precise parentage[53].  In a later part, he says that she was doña URRACA Alfonso, illegitimate daughter of ALFONSO X "el Sabio" King of Castile & his mistress ---[54]

Álvaro & his wife had three children: 

1.         don PEDRO Núñez de Guzmán .  Salazar y Castro records his parentage[55]m doña MARÍA de la Cerda, daughter of ---.  Salazar y Castro states that Pedro Núñez de Guzmán, son of Álvaro Pérez de Guzmán, married "doña María de la Cerda"[56]However, in another section of his work, he says that "doña María de la Cerda Señora de Gibraleón" was the wife of Pedro´s father[57].  Her parentage has not been ascertained.  Some secondary works state that she was doña María Alfonso, illegitimate daughter of don Juan Alfonso de la Cerda [Castilla] Señor de Gibraleón, and the connection with Gibraleón makes this an attractive possibility.  The uncertainty about her paternity is noted by Dupont[58].  Pedro & his wife had one child:
